Liverpool have agreed a deal for their next signing, and it's a midfielder.

Richard Hughes is expected to make midfield reinforcements a key priority in the upcoming summer transfer window, as Liverpool deal with increasing uncertainty around several important figures in that area of the squad.

A major concern is the situation of Curtis Jones. With his current contract moving into its final year and little visible progress made on an extension, speculation over his long-term future at the club has begun to grow.

Liverpool are now likely open to allowing the England international to depart for pastures new.

His uncertain contract position has added further pressure on the club to reassess both its depth in midfield and its longer-term planning. Ensuring stability in that area is becoming increasingly important.

There are also ongoing questions surrounding Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, even though both remain under contract until 2028.

Neither player is expected to leave in the immediate future, but Liverpool are aware of sustained interest from top European clubs and the need to protect the core of their midfield.

The situations of the two players are slightly different, however.

Dominik Szoboszlai is believed to be progressing positively in discussions with the club, with growing optimism that an agreement can eventually be reached to secure his long-term future at Anfield.

By contrast, talks involving Alexis Mac Allister have reportedly slowed in recent months, introducing a degree of uncertainty over his longer-term intentions despite his importance to the side.

And it looks like Liverpool are preparing for the future and a potential move to replace Mac Allister.

There have been numerous rumours that Liverpool are closing in on their first signing of the summer and it's a midfielder.

Who could this midfielder be?

There have been links with Adam Wharton, Lamine Camara and Mamadou Sangare, among others, of course.

But it looks like the first midfielder through the door won't be any of them and they won't even be coming in to join the club this summer but next summer.

Of course, Wharton and the others will be a priority as well. But for now, it looks like Liverpool are looking to future proof with an exciting signing.

The rumours on Friday have been about Samuel Martinez from Colombia being a target for Liverpool. All these rumours came from various sources but now the most reliable man when it comes to transfers has spoken.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool have agreed a move to sign Martinez for 2027, with the midfielder expected to join the Reds when he turns 18-years-old.

Likened to Kaka, and capable of playing as a no.8 as well as no.10, this feels like a really exciting transfer.

He was one of the best players at the U17 Copa America earlier this year and really dominated the middle of the park with his elegance and poise.

There are few midfielders as exciting as him, and he could easily be an absolute gem. It looks like Michael Edwards is finally venturing back to South America and looking to exploit the exciting market opportunities there for Liverpool.
