Liverpool are reportedly making moves to sign a special winger according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds always aim to compete at the very highest level, both in domestic competitions and across Europe.

To achieve that, they require attackers who can perform with reliability every single week, something Cody Gakpo has found difficult to maintain, particularly when used on the left wing.

There is no question about his talent. Gakpo has demonstrated his ability on multiple occasions, delivering key goals and moments of genuine quality. He played a role during last season’s title-winning campaign, showing glimpses of what he can offer when in form.

However, those moments have been inconsistent, making it hard for him to secure a place as an undisputed starter in a team striving to be among Europe’s elite. At the highest level, consistency is crucial, and that remains a significant question mark surrounding his game.

A major concern is his effectiveness in one-on-one situations.

In modern football, wide players are expected to beat defenders, stretch opposition backlines, and create chances from difficult positions. Too often, Gakpo struggles in these scenarios, finding it difficult to impose himself or consistently trouble opposing full-backs.

While his technical ability and eye for goal are clear, Liverpool need more regular influence and attacking threat from their wide players if they are to maintain their ambitions at the top level.

It's why reinforcing the winger position will be a priority in the summer transfer window. Especially since Mo Salah is also going to be leaving the club.

Adding at least two natural wide players would give Liverpool greater tactical flexibility. A proper winger can stretch defences, create isolation situations, and open up space for inside forwards like Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike to thrive in the areas they prefer.

There have been a myriad of names mentioned over the last few months.

But one name has been cropping up more and more.

Yan Diomande.

He's been name dropped by Paul Joyce several times as a target and Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed for the first time that Liverpool are interested and have made moves to sign the Ivorian by sending scouts to regularly observe him in action.

“For Yan Diomande, several clubs are there, several clubs are calling," Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“Paris Saint-Germain are interested, Bayern are interested, and also Liverpool remain keen on the player.

“Diomande has a new agency since January, Roc Nation, and Leipzig are discussing the possibility to keep the player for one more season, extend his contract and include a release clause to sell the player in 2027.

“But it is Diomande deciding, also, based on the proposals arriving this summer.

“Liverpool keep tracking the player. Liverpool have been in attendance with their scouts over the recent games, in the last two games of Red Bull Leipzig to follow Yan Diomande.

“And Liverpool appreciate the player. They know they are not alone.

“From Premier League, from Bayern, from Paris Saint-Germain, there are several clubs interested.

“But, Yan Diomande, for sure, is going to be an interesting case to follow in this summer transfer window, waiting first of all to understand if he decides to accept new contract from Leipzig, higher salary, release clause, leaving in 2027 or 2028, or if he wants to leave immediately.”
