Liverpool Transfer Plans Continue After Fabrizio Romano’s Munoz Update

Liverpool’s summer rebuild under Andoni Iraola appears far from complete, despite the club moving quickly to secure Victor Munoz from Osasuna.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed late on Wednesday that Liverpool had agreed a deal for the Spanish winger by activating his €40m, around £34.7m, release clause. The move came at speed, with the Reds stepping in ahead of Newcastle United to complete one of the more eye-catching transfer turns of the window.

For Liverpool, this is not expected to be the end of their attacking recruitment. If anything, Munoz looks like the first major piece of a wider plan.

Romano expects more Liverpool activity

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano addressed the question many Liverpool supporters were asking immediately after news of the Munoz deal emerged.

“Many Liverpool fans have been asking me [after agreeing the deal for Munoz] if this means it’s closing doors to signing another winger – my answer is no… They are working behind the scenes to add at least one more winger to the squad.”

That line will be significant for supporters who have watched the squad shift dramatically since the end of last season. Mohamed Salah’s departure has changed the complexion of Liverpool’s forward line, while Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo have both been linked with possible exits.

Romano added: “The idea of Liverpool is to add one more winger to the squad. I expect Liverpool to be busy with midfielders, but I expect Liverpool to add one more winger.”

That message is clear. Liverpool have signed Munoz, but their work in wide areas is continuing.

Iraola needs depth and variety

Andoni Iraola has inherited a squad that required fresh energy after a difficult 2025/26 campaign. Arne Slot delivered the Premier League title in 2024/25, but Liverpool’s sharp decline the following season led to his dismissal on 30 May 2026.

Iraola’s arrival now brings a different tactical demand. His football requires intensity, directness and repeat running from wide areas. Munoz fits that idea, but one winger alone would leave Liverpool short if another senior forward departs before the window closes.

Yan Diomande, strongly linked with Liverpool, remains a name to watch. His profile would add further pace, power and unpredictability, giving Iraola more tools to reshape the attack.

Midfield remains a major focus

Romano’s update also pointed towards midfield being a key part of Liverpool’s recruitment drive. That tallies with wider reporting around the squad, with central midfield viewed as an area that needs attention.

Liverpool have been linked with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, while other names are expected to emerge as the club assess value, availability and fit.

For Iraola, the midfield issue is crucial. His system needs legs, control and defensive security. Liverpool cannot simply add forwards and expect the structure to repair itself. The engine room needs balance, especially after a season in which performances dropped well below expectations.

Defensive concerns could still shape plans

There is also the question of defensive depth. Injuries exposed Liverpool last season, and supporters will understandably wonder whether the club can afford to leave that area untouched.

Much will depend on exits. If senior players leave, Liverpool’s priorities may shift quickly. FSG’s recruitment team have already shown with the Munoz move that they are prepared to act decisively when an opportunity appears.

For now, the message from Fabrizio Romano is encouraging. Liverpool are not treating Munoz as the final attacking addition. They are still working, still assessing, and still looking to give Andoni Iraola a squad capable of competing properly.

The hope for supporters is simple. By the time the window closes, Liverpool must look prepared, balanced and built for the demands of a new era.
