Sunderland have been handed a boost over reported target Marcos Senesi, with Fabrizio Romano saying the Bournemouth defender will leave as a free agent this summer and wants to remain in the Premier League.

The Argentina international, capped three times, has been linked with Sunderland, Newcastle, Everton and Aston Villa in recent months amid attention from Spain and Italy.

Earlier this year, Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola said the situation around a new deal remained open, that it was not straightforward, and that he did not believe Senesi had made a decision at that stage.

Senesi is approaching the final months of his contract at the Vitality Stadium. He joined the Cherries in 2022 for a reported £12m and has made more than 100 appearances.

With free agency looming, his representatives are speaking to Premier League clubs. Interest from abroad, including Barcelona and Juventus, has not shifted his preference to stay in England.
