Daniel Farke will defer any decision on Mateo Joseph’s future until Leeds have finished their Premier League and FA Cup campaigns, while offering sympathy after the striker’s ACL blow.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 22-year-old suffered the knee injury last month while on loan at Mallorca, ending his season and ruling him out for several months.
He spent the campaign in La Liga after asking to return to Spain rather than join Leeds’ pre-season tours. He started 19 league games and made 10 substitute appearances, scoring two and providing four assists, the last setting up the winner against Real Madrid just before he was hurt.
Farke had disagreed with Joseph’s decision to skip the Germany training camp last summer, but this week he kept the focus on the current squad and targets. He will revisit loan situations and recruitment once both competitions are over and the club have achieved what they want.
The head coach offered support to Joseph and underlined that a proper rehabilitation is the priority. Leeds, as the mother club, have their view, Mallorca are involved and the relationship is good.
Joseph’s team-mates dedicated a win over Rayo Vallecano to him, while former Leeds colleagues posted messages of support. In a social media message, he reflected on having to stop, the loss of routine, and the need to be patient and trust the process, accepting that some days will be better than others.
