Erik Ten Hag was officially presented as the new Sporting Director of FC Twente this week. The former Ajax, Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen head coach has taken the decision to move upstairs following his departure from the Bundesliga. However, as reported by ESPN, his time as a head coach is certainly not over. Asked about the possibility of Ten Hag taking over from Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Dutch national team, general manager Dominique Scholten said ‘If that opportunity arises at some point and Erik wants it, we’ll see if we can make it happen. We’re down-to-earth people in Twente’.
For now, Koeman is still in charge, and Ten Hag was adamant that he just wants to focus on his new role with the Eredivisie side. Given the way in which his last role as a head coach in the Bundesliga panned out, it is not surprising that ten Hag once a break from frontline management. The former Manchester United man said of the chance to manage the Dutch national team ‘I’m never going to talk about ‘ifs.’ One hundred percent focus on FC Twente. I’m consciously choosing this position now’.
Ten Hag will certainly have work to do during the winter transfer window. Twente are currently in seventh place in the Eredivisie, seven points adrift of the top three and Ten Hag’s former side Ajax.
