Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been rewarded for securing direct spots in the last 16 of the Champions League, with a lighter February schedule compared to Real Madrid.

This difference in fixtures could play a role in their respective performances and qualifications.

While Barça and Atletico will have more rest due to fewer matches, Real Madrid face a much more demanding month, starting with an important European tie against Manchester City.

A demanding scheduled

Real Madrid’s February begins with a crucial La Liga match against Atletico de Madrid at home on Saturday, 8th February.

Just a few days later, they travel to the Etihad Stadium for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with Manchester City.

The challenges don’t end there; the following weekend, Los Blancos must face a difficult trip to Osasuna, a team known for its tough home performances. Madrid will then host Girona before the return leg against Manchester City.

What about Barcelona and Atletico?

In contrast, Barcelona and Atletico benefit from a relatively calmer month, having fewer fixtures to contend with.

Both teams have two fewer games to play, giving them more time to rest and prepare for the next rounds in both domestic and European competitions.

Their focus will shift to the Copa del Rey, where they will play their quarter-final ties next week. Barcelona face Leganes, Atletico takes on Getafe, and Real Madrid meet Valencia in what promises to be an exciting knockout stage.

More matches on the horizon

If any of these teams make it to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, they will play the first leg on Wednesday, 26th February, just one week before the Champions League last-16 first legs on 4th and 5th March.

The return legs will take place a week later, on 11th and 12th March. For Barcelona, February’s league fixtures seem less daunting.

Their opponents include Rayo Vallecano at home, Alaves at home, Sevilla away, and Las Palmas away. Only Rayo Vallecano are currently in the top half of the table, suggesting that Barça have a good chance of securing valuable points.
