Evan Ferguson’s loan move to West Ham hasn’t been the roaring success that West Ham would have hoped for, and a potential price tag of £50 million is something that the East London club won’t be keen to pursue.
West Ham’s season has been a disappointment, and Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal in January underlined how poorly the Hammers had been performing. There aren’t many betting markets left to explore at this point in the season for West Ham Fans, except match betting. Established UK operators and new betting sites not on Gamstop UK believe the club are free from relegation worries, pricing them at 300/1 to go down.
The appointment of Graham Potter and Premier League survival are positives to build on for next season, but as things stand, Ferguson won’t be a part of the rebuild.
Potter knows all about Ferguson as he was in charge of Brighton when the highly rated Irishman signed from Bohemians. He went on to score 18 goals in 39 appearances for the Brighton and Hove Albion under-21s before being drafted into the first team.
He scored 17 times in 80 games, as well as contributing 5 assists for Brighton. To have this amount of experience in the Premier League at the age of 20 is something that has seen him linked with potential big moves before.
A loan deal for a move to West Ham was agreed at the start of February, but he is still without a goal in 6 appearances. The club were on the lookout for a forward after Danny Ings and £27 million summer signing Niclas Fullkrug to find form.
West Ham’s attacking problems were exacerbated in December when the club’s record Premier League goal scorer, Michail Antonio, was involved in a horror crash. The 35-year-old was lucky not to be killed in the accident, but suffered a bad leg break that many feared would end his career.
While it signalled he end of his season, the Jamaican international has been positive about returning to play. The player’s injury could have been much worse if not for the timely intervention of the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, which helped to save his leg. Antonio has since visited the crew who were on hand to provide the emergency care that has saved his career.
With Danny Ings and Michail Antonio out of contract at the end of the season, the club are likely to be in the market for a new striker. The club will likely listen to offers for Fullkrug as well, and that might help them finance a deal for a forward, but despite ticking a lot of boxes, Ferguson’s fee might be out of the club’s reach.
Potter has stated that a fully fit Fullkrug will be a success at West Ham, and there is the potential that Antonio will get a year’s contract extension as he battles back from injury.
Removing Danny Ings’ £125,000 a week wage from the bill will help Potter make the changes he needs.
