Barcelona midfielder Fermín López has sustained a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and will undergo surgery. With the World Cup less than a month away, SPORT reports that he will miss the tournament and could face about two months out.
This is a heavy blow for the attacking midfielder, who had become integral to Barcelona’s LaLiga season under Hansi Flick. Flick used him as a No 10, on the left wing and even as an interior.
In Luis de la Fuente’s Spain he was expected to be important as a No 10, where Dani Olmo is also in the frame. At Euro 2024 he was part of the title-winning squad, playing 28 minutes against Albania.
After leading Spain to Olympic gold in Paris, he graduated fully to the senior side, though he was not a regular starter. His first start arrived in his sixth cap in March.
He impressed with 45 minutes in Villarreal against Serbia, supplying the assist for Oyarzabal’s opener and posing a constant threat between the lines with Pedri and Rodri behind him.
Team-mate Ferran Torres experienced a similar injury while at Manchester City in October 2021 and was sidelined for around three months.
