Manchester United hold a significant advantage over Newcastle United in the race for Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, with the 21-year-old Belgian reportedly determined to play Champions League football – something only the Reds can offer.

According to The Peoples Person, Fernandez-Pardo’s ambition to compete at European football’s highest level is the decisive factor separating the two English clubs. Newcastle, who finished 12th in the Premier League last season, cannot offer any European football whatsoever.

What Fernandez-Pardo Brings

Fernandez-Pardo caught United’s eye after a productive 2025–26 campaign at Lille – eight goals and five assists in Ligue 1, with his total output across all competitions reaching 15 goal contributions in around 40 appearances. Sky Sports revealed United’s interest last month, and he is currently representing Belgium at the World Cup.

Lille have been valuing Fernandez-Pardo in the region of €60m this summer after rebuffing mid-season interest at around €40m in the winter window. Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona have also been monitoring him, so United are operating in a crowded field despite their European pull.

Summerville Comes First

Fernandez-Pardo is currently a secondary target. United’s primary attacking focus this window is Crysencio Summerville, who enhanced his reputation considerably with the Netherlands at the World Cup. The Peoples Person reported that Summerville “only” wants to join United despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur, viewing Old Trafford as his “ultimate destination, believing it’s the place where he can compete for the Champions League and the Premier League.” His established Premier League record makes him the lower-risk option of the two.

Newcastle’s position has been further complicated by missing out on their priority winger target Víctor Munoz, who joined Liverpool. The Magpies have made enquiries with Lille over Fernandez-Pardo and like him a great deal, but the Champions League gap is a structural disadvantage they cannot paper over.

United’s ability to move on Fernandez-Pardo is contingent on sales – any forward addition is understood to depend on shifting at least one unwanted attacker first, with Joshua Zirkzee among those whose futures are uncertain at Carrington. The cultural reset under Michael Carrick is another draw for a player at this stage of his development, but the fee and squad logistics will need to align before United formalise their interest with a bid.
