Fernando Carro said he would love Julian Brandt to return to Bayer Leverkusen, speaking before Saturday's Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich.

"I think Julian Brandt is sensational," Carro said to DAZN. "If [B04 sporting director] Simon [Rolfes] wants him, I’d be supportive if that."

Brandt left Leverkusen for Borussia Dortmund in a €25m move ahead of the 2019/20 season. Last week it emerged Dortmund will not renew the 29-year-old's expiring contract.

His next step remains unclear. Rumours this week linked him with Arsenal and Barcelona, and he may consider moving abroad for the first time. A return to Leverkusen could also appeal.

When he joined Lucien Favre's Dortmund he was valued at €50m and already had 23 senior caps after bright moments at the 2018 World Cup. Since then he has drifted in and out of the national team, adding only 25 caps in the seven years since. His market value slid from €50m in 2019 to €20m in August 2021.

He recovered form to reach €40m in 2023 and 2024, but over the last two years has fallen back to €20m in Transfermarkt listings. Brandt missed the 2024 Euros on home soil and won one trophy with BVB, the 2021 DFB Pokal. He also saw Leverkusen lift the 2023/24 Bundesliga title under Xabi Alonso.
