Fernando Diniz was confirmed by Corinthians on Monday, a year after finishing runner-up to them with Vasco da Gama in the 2025 Copa do Brasil. He becomes the third coach to take the job in such circumstances.

According to Meu Timao, the previous cases were Oswaldo de Oliveira in 2004 and Tite in 2010. Both were hired a year after losing finals to Corinthians.

In 2003, Corinthians won their 25th Campeonato Paulista against São Paulo. In both matches at Morumbis, Corinthians won 3-2 against the side coached by Oswaldo, who returned in 2004 for a second spell, before a third stint in 2016, totalling 124 games.

In 2009, Corinthians beat Internacional 2-0 then drew 2-2 to claim the Copa do Brasil for the third time. Tite later delivered the Brasileirão titles of 2011 and 2015, the Libertadores and Club World Cup in 2012, plus the Recopa and Paulista in 2013, across two spells and 378 games.

In December last year, Diniz’s Vasco drew with Corinthians at the Neo Química Arena and lost 2-1 at the Maracanã. That triumph sealed Corinthians’ fourth Copa do Brasil.

Diniz has been out of work since February after leaving the Rio club. He has signed until the end of 2026 and will make his debut on Thursday against Platense of Argentina at 21:00 in Buenos Aires, in the Libertadores group stage opener.
