Fernando Diniz defended 19-year-old midfielder André Luiz after Corinthians beat Barra 1-0 to reach the Copa do Brasil last 16.

According to Meu Timao, many fans were unhappy with his display and he received the lowest rating on the outlet’s Notas da Torcida.

Speaking after the match, Diniz stressed a gradual development path. He described André as highly talented with a bright future and said he has everything to succeed in European football.

The coach noted natural fluctuations for young players, highlighting recent suspensions that interrupted his rhythm. He added that the game offered little space for his driving runs and acceleration, which blunted his strengths.

André began 2026 as a starter under Dorival Júnior and came close to joining Milan. The move did not materialise after strong pressure from supporters and the then coach on the board.

Corinthians now face Botafogo on Sunday at 16:00 at Estádio Nilton Santos in the 16th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
