Fernando Diniz reiterated his wish for Memphis Depay to extend his stay at Corinthians after the 1-0 win over Vasco da Gama, saying he wants the Dutchman in his squad for longer.
According to Meu Timao, Diniz said he is growing closer to Depay and admires both his quality and character, calling his presence a gift to Corinthians and Brazilian football.
Depay’s contract runs until 20 June 2026. He is already free to sign a pre-contract with any club and could leave without a fee when it expires.
A renewal is seen positively by both sides. Corinthians are seeking partners to share his wages, similar to the Esportes da Sorte model, and about R$ 57 million is no longer earmarked solely for him after that sponsor’s renewal.
Any stay would hinge on revised terms and a renegotiation of roughly R$ 40 million owed in bonuses. His deal includes a signing-on fee, appearance, goal and assist bonuses, plus salary and image rights of around R$ 3 million a month.
Diniz has yet to use Depay since taking charge. The number 10 has been sidelined since 22 March with a grade 2 anterior thigh injury suffered against Flamengo in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
He was slated for derby minutes and to start against Independiente Santa Fe in the Libertadores, but a setback linked to fitness preparation issues strained relations and delayed his return. He now trains separately, works double daily at the training ground, and is progressing well.
