Ferran Torres says World Cup cap slogan was not political

Ferran Torres has addressed the row over a cap he wore during Spain’s World Cup celebrations, insisting it was not political.

During the victory parade in Madrid, the 26-year-old Barcelona forward appeared in a red cap bearing four words, “Make Spain Great Again”. “Yes, it was a funny moment, but it had nothing to do with politics,” he said. He was speaking to CNN.

“Honestly, I do not understand politics.”

The slogan echoed Donald Trump’s campaign line “Make America Great Again”, and in Spain it has been used in recent years by Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right party Vox.

“It was just to see Spain at the top again, winning the World Cup.”
