Feyenoord continued their unbeaten start to the season on Sunday with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Utrecht. A fifth win in nine league games takes the Rotterdam club up to third in the table, still three points off Utrecht who also came into this clash unbeaten.
Fresh off the back of beating Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday, Feyenoord were looking to put things right in the Eredivisie. New head coach Brian Priske has come under pressure for dropping points against the likes of Willem II, Sparta Rotterdam, Groningen and NEC. A recent serious injury to star striker Santiago Giménez has made the situation even worse for the Danish manager.
Sunday’s clash against Utrecht looked like a tough task on paper, but backup striker Julián Carranza made his mark early on, netting his second goal of the season inside 12 minutes. A low driven pass from Hugo Bueno found the feet of the Argentine who made no mistake from close range. Shortly after the interval, captain Quinten Timber converted to make it two.
Feyenoord are now unbeaten in their last 20 away games in all competions. That’s equalled their longest unbeaten away run ever according to Opta. Next up for Feyenoord… it’s Ajax at De Kuip. For Ron Jans’ Utrecht, they were on a remarkable run of six successive Eredivisie wins before Sunday’s defeat. Their next league game is away at Sparta Rotterdam.
