FIFA has amended its rules so minor bans collected in qualifying will not apply at the World Cup, making Otamendi and Moises Caicedo eligible to begin the tournament with their national teams.

L'Équipe reports that the change, made on Thursday to article 10, paragraph 2, lifts their suspensions.

Both players were sent off in Ecuador’s 1-0 win over Argentina on 10 September, the final South American qualifier and the last competitive match for both sides.

As a result, they had been due to miss the opening of the World Cup.

Otamendi’s Argentina are scheduled to face Algeria in the night of 16 to 17 June at 3am.

Caicedo’s Ecuador play Ivory Coast in the night of 14 to 15 June at 1am.
