The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is preparing a major overhaul of the refereeing system, with president Gabriele Gravina presenting an urgent reform plan to federal components this week that could affect Serie A.
The proposal would introduce full professionalism for referees starting from the 2026/27 season.
Indeed, marking a structural shift in Italian football governance across the leagues, as per FCInterNews.
According to reports, discussions will intensify next week during an operational meeting before the project is submitted to the Federal Council for approval.
The reform envisions the creation of a private company wholly owned by the FIGC.
Indeed, deliberately excluding the leagues from direct participation.

This new entity would oversee an elite refereeing group dedicated to Serie A and Serie B, managed by a three-member independent board of directors.
That board would appoint both a general director and a head of refereeing appointments, ensuring clearer governance and accountability.
A technical director role for youth football is also under consideration.
The initiative reflects growing pressure to modernize officiating standards and increase transparency at the highest levels of Italian football.
