A controversial late penalty punishes a brave Villarreal at Signal Iduna Park

Villarreal suffered defeat in Dortmund despite producing an impressive performance at one of Europe’s most intimidating stadiums. The Yellows competed toe-to-toe with the German side, who made the most of their chances and benefited from a controversial late penalty that denied the Yellow Submarine what would have been a deserved point in their demanding continental opener.

Borussia Dortmund took the lead through an unfortunate own goal by Renato Veiga. Villarreal responded and levelled the match thanks to a Santiago Mouriño header. Iñigo Pérez’s side fought hard to stay in the contest, but the hosts regained the lead before adding a third from the penalty spot. Deep into stoppage time, Villarreal reduced the deficit to 3-2 and came agonisingly close to snatching a dramatic equaliser.

The Yellows returned to the UEFA Champions League full of optimism and eager to make amends for last season’s disappointing European campaign, which ended with just one point collected during the league phase.

For the second consecutive year, Villarreal were competing in Europe’s premier club competition, a tournament that brings together the best teams in world football and one in which the Yellow Submarine have remarkably reached the semi-finals on two occasions (2006 and 2022). With that spirit and belief, Villarreal approached this new European adventure. They also arrived in Germany looking to bounce back after a difficult start to their LALIGA campaign, where positive performances had yet to translate into victories.

For the trip to Signal Iduna Park, Iñigo Pérez made seven changes to the side that faced Deportivo. Saliba, Comesaña and Gueye reinforced midfield, while Buchanan, Mikautadze and Tani Oluwaseyi formed a pacey attacking trio. At the back were Mouriño, Pau, Renato Veiga and Cardona, while experienced Hungarian goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi made his debut between the posts.

The Yellow Submarine aimed to surprise Borussia Dortmund in front of the famous Yellow Wall, a venue where Villarreal suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat last season after Juan Foyth’s early second-half dismissal.

Courage from the opening whistle

Villarreal started brightly, showing bravery on the ball, controlling possession and pressing high up the pitch. Their first opportunity arrived after just two minutes, when Pau Navarro headed wide from a Buchanan corner.

The visitors threatened again after the opening quarter of an hour. Mikautadze was unable to make clean contact with another superb Buchanan delivery, with the Canadian winger heavily involved in Villarreal’s attacking play.

Dortmund also created dangerous moments. In the eighth minute, Guirassy came within inches of converting a dangerous cross from Beier. It was an entertaining and evenly matched contest, with both teams looking to dominate possession and attack.

In the 41st minute, Buchanan tested Kobel with a powerful effort from the edge of the area, forcing the goalkeeper into a two-stage save. Dortmund responded strongly before the break, but Villarreal held firm and went into half-time with the score still level.

Villarreal respond brilliantly to the opener

The second half started badly for the Yellows. After Nwaneri struck the post with a low effort from distance, Dortmund took the lead. A driven cross from the left deflected off Renato Veiga and ended up in the back of the net.

Despite the setback, Villarreal reacted with determination. They pushed forward bravely and created several opportunities to equalise. Their reward arrived in the 66th minute when Mouriño powered home a header from a corner kick, anticipating his marker at the near post.

Before finding the equaliser, Villarreal had already created three clear chances. Tani Oluwaseyi headed wide from an excellent Buchanan cross, Nicolas Pepe narrowly missed the top corner with a curling effort, and Santi Comesaña forced Kobel into a smart save with a powerful strike from outside the area.

The visitors’ response unsettled Dortmund, who struggled to regain control after Villarreal’s impressive spell. The hosts eventually threatened again in the 74th minute through a Guirassy header that drifted wide.

A controversial penalty proves decisive

In the closing stages, Dortmund regained their advantage and ultimately secured victory. Guirassy made it 2-1 after converting a Fabio Silva assist before adding a third from the penalty spot following a highly contentious decision. The referee pointed to the spot after an incident involving Mouriño and the Dortmund striker inside the penalty area.

Deep into stoppage time, Villarreal nearly produced a dramatic comeback. The Yellows reduced the deficit through a Guirassy own goal after the ball rebounded off his face following a Kobel save from a Nicolas Pepe free-kick.

In the 94th minute, Renato Veiga had a golden opportunity to rescue a point, but his effort from inside the area was brilliantly blocked by a Dortmund defender.

Villarreal delivered an excellent performance but left one of Europe’s toughest stadiums empty-handed.
