Financial realities likely to end Andy Robertson’s Celtic dream

Celtic would need to stretch their financial limits significantly if they are to secure the return of Andy Robertson this summer…

Liverpool confirmed on Thursday that the Scotland captain will depart Anfield at the end of the campaign, bringing the curtain down on an iconic nine-year spell with the club.

Robertson’s well-documented support for Celtic has naturally sparked speculation about a potential move to the Hoops, but the left-back is expected to attract widespread interest across Europe.

According to David Ornstein in The Athletic, Tottenham currently lead the race to sign him on a free transfer, although their uncertain Premier League status could yet impact that pursuit.

Clubs including Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Napoli are also monitoring the situation closely, with each offering a compelling alternative for the experienced defender.

Robertson previously came close to joining Spurs in January but opted to remain at Liverpool for the remainder of the season. Atletico Madrid had also made an attempt to bring him to Spain last year, with Diego Simeone known to favour recruiting from the English top flight.

Napoli may present another attractive destination for Robertson, particularly given the recent success of Scottish players in Serie A, with Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour both plying their trade in Naples.

Meanwhile, Juventus are said to be exploring multiple Liverpool options, with interest extending beyond Robertson to include goalkeeper Alisson Becker, while Federico Chiesa has been linked with a return to Turin.

While such competition complicates Celtic’s hopes, it does not entirely eliminate the possibility of a move. Kieran Tierney faced a similar decision last summer, ultimately choosing a path guided by his heart rather than financial incentives.

Robertson’s connection to Celtic dates back to his youth, although he was released by the club at the age of 15 before rebuilding his career through the lower leagues with Queen’s Park.

Questions also remain over whether Celtic could realistically accommodate both Robertson and Tierney in the same squad, given their shared position on the left side of defence.

Steve Clarke has grappled with fitting both players into the same system for years, most recently deploying them together in a back five against Ivory Coast late last month.
