Fitness warnings kills off Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Celtic rumour

You know we’re really in the midst of summer transfer window madness when Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being linked with Celtic and Ally McCoist is talking like he’s on Paul Tisdale’s scouting team…

On TalkSport this morning, Jeff Stelling and McCoist were discussing the now-former Everton striker, with the latter saying:

“Fitness. It’s fitness, it’s only fitness. It’s fitness for me.”

That’s four mentions of fitness, for those counting, which, if you’ve been paying attention to Dom’s injury record, feels both fair and arguably prophetic too. Dominik Calvert-Lewin is certainly a good player but is he more bling than sting these days?

At his best, he’s quick, sharp, dominant in the air, and can finish – when he’s confident. He’s led the line in the Premier League and played for England.

He’s also a footballer with the wardrobe of a Milan runway model, part footballer, part fashionista, but do we know which side of that argument he’s most weighted to these days? Because he’s played fewer than 40 league games in three seasons. An injury record that makes Derk Boerrigter look insurable. But he is a handsome boy, I’ll give him that!

So yes, on paper, it’s an intriguing one. Celtic are arguably in the market for a striker — possibly even two — and getting a player of Calvert-Lewin’s pedigree on a free would be a coup. If he stays fit. If he buys into the project. If his mind is on the pitch and not the Prada shoot. That’s a lot of ifs, and we haven’t even talked wages yet.

This feels more like the talk-show speculation it is, and that’s all it’s likely to ever be, rather than something even remotely grounded in reality. It’s the classic ‘Celtic could do worse’ transfer rumour. it gets us dreaming, or debating, but it’s built on chewing the fat on the radio and not much else, it’s certainly not grounded in any reality.

Would he fit Celtic? Possibly — if Brendan’s willing to gamble. He’s mobile (when fit), can lead the line, and offers something different to what we’ve got. But we need reliability, and to steal a quote, the best ability is availability, and that’s the red flag in Calvert-Lewin’s career. With Champions League qualifiers looming and a tough domestic campaign ahead, we don’t have the luxury of passengers or carrying a gamble in the squad.

That said, if you’re a fan of transfer season madness — and let’s be honest, who isn’t? — then this is an amusing wee rumour. It’s big-name nonsense. A dash of fantasy with your cuppa.

Is it happening? Almost certainly not. Would it be fun if it did? Absolutely. Would it work? Your guess is as good as mine. But in the meantime, let the window roll on, and let the madness continue.

Just don’t be too surprised when Calvert-Lewin ends up modelling in Milan instead of pinging them in at Celtic Park.
