Five friends from Almassora travelled to Atlanta for their first World Cup game, seeing Spain held 0-0 by Cabo Verde in a trip they will not forget. El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that the group was led by councillor, writer and football fan Vicente Blay.

Blay said they flew out for four intense days and are already talking about returning to future tournaments. It was their first time following Spain at a World Cup.

They attended only Spain v Cabo Verde, and the Atlanta stadium made a big impression, which Blay called one of the most modern. The crowd was announced at 64,400.

Prices stood out, with main-stand seats at 800 dollars. The group paid 170 dollars high in the third tier and still enjoyed a clear view.

Support in the stands largely favoured Spain, helped by many Latin American fans who consider La Roja their second team. Lamine Yamal’s image was everywhere, underlining his star status in the United States.

Blay felt football knowledge in the United States remains limited, even in Atlanta. Pre-match, Spanish fans told local broadcasters they expected a big win, but the game proved tougher, with too much sideways passing for his liking.

He regretted the absence of Baena and Borja Iglesias, and praised Cabo Verde’s cheerful, friendly support. Spain now face two decisive group games, and Blay hopes momentum improves, noting Uruguay drew and that a Saudi Arabia win would have made the group far harsher.
