Many of the best players in the world will be fighting for the sport’s biggest prize. However, some top stars will not feature this summer.

Here are five players who have missed out on the FIFA showpiece.

Benjamin Sesko – Slovenia

Sesko is a gifted centre-forward who is known for his blistering pace, physicality and powerful finishing.

The 22-year-old has scored 11 Premier League goals this season, helping Manchester United secure Champions League football.

The exciting forward won’t be at the 2026 World Cup, as Slovenia finished behind Switzerland and Kosovo in their qualifying group.

Alessandro Bastoni – Italy

The defender is generally renowned for his composure under pressure and tactical intelligence, but he let Italy down.

Bastoni has helped Inter Milan win two Serie A titles and reach two Champions League finals.

Dominik Szoboszlai – Hungary

Szoboszlai has had an excellent campaign with Liverpool, despite the club’s struggles.

Operating in different roles in midfield and defence, he has been a consistent performer for Arne Slot’s side.

He will not be at the 2026 World Cup after Hungary’s qualifying campaign ended with a disappointing 3-2 defeat against the Republic of Ireland in November.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – Georgia

Kvaratskhelia is an elite winger renowned for his dribbling skills, explosive pace and exceptional playmaking ability.

The 25-year-old helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League within six months of joining from Napoli.

Kvaratskhelia will be sorely missed in North America, as Georgia failed to secure a World Cup spot, finishing behind Spain and Turkey in Group E.

Victor Osimhen – Nigeria

Osimhen did his best to help Nigeria reach a first World Cup since 2018, scoring eight goals in the African qualifiers.

However, the Super Eagles finished behind South Africa in Group C and later suffered a gut-wrenching defeat to DR Congo in the play-off final.

Nigeria’s elimination means football fans will not be able to admire Osimhen’s explosive pace, raw athleticism and clinical finishing at the 2026 World Cup.
