After the 1-0 win over Chapecoense, head coach Abel Ferreira backed the board’s stance. He said the plan is to have everyone fit and for nobody to leave, noting the signing of centre-back Barboza, and he hopes to keep the group together.

Palmeiras are protected by a contract renewed in September last year that runs until the end of 2029. The hierarchy have taken a similar line whenever leading players attract interest from Europe.

The forward is the club’s top scorer this season with 14 goals and nine assists. Signed from Lanús in 2022, he is in strong form and has cemented his place.

On Thursday he played his final match before travelling to finish preparations with Argentina, a 4-1 win over Junior Barranquilla. Afterwards he left his future open, saying decisions will be made after the World Cup and that enjoyment is his priority.

Palmeiras lead the Brasileiro and are into the last 16 of the Copa do Brasil and the Conmebol Libertadores, and intend to keep key names for the second half of the year.
