In addition to criticism from fans on social media, the negotiations led to increased pressure behind the scenes, with political questions and concerns about the decisions made by football director José Boto. Indeed, Johnson had previously been on loan at Portuguese side Vitória SC at the same time as José Boto.

The forward, who plays for the Irish national team, would have cost £5 millions in the deal with Championship side West Bromwich.

Last season, Johnson played 41 times for the Baggies in all competitions, scoring three goal and assisting five more.
