Flamengo had already reached agreement with Leonardo Jardim before Filipe Luís was told of his dismissal, despite Monday’s 8-0 win over Madureira, according to Globo.com.

The Portuguese coach finalised terms at the weekend, with intermediaries informing Bap last Thursday, before the Lanús game, that he wanted to return to work. The president then moved to close a deal.

Defeat to Lanús proved the last straw for Bap, who decided late on Thursday to dismiss Filipe. Early-season losses in the Supercopa and Recopa had weighed, but Jardim’s availability accelerated events. Talks began on Friday, Jardim approved the deal on Sunday, it was sealed on Monday, and Filipe would have gone regardless of the Madureira result.

Their relationship had cooled in 2026, partly over how contract renewal talks were handled. A January change of plan to recall the first-team group early for the Carioca deepened tensions. Filipe saw direct interference, while Bap was angered by the exposure in explanations to players and by leaks to the media.

Negotiations were swift because they followed terms set out in December, when Bap had resolved that Jardim would take charge once he was ready to return. With Jardim in Belo Horizonte this week for personal commitments, the president accelerated talks and Boto handled the final details across the weekend.

The dismissal had become likely amid a tense atmosphere at the training ground, even though most players still backed Filipe. It had been anticipated the split would not come before next Sunday’s Campeonato Carioca final against Fluminense. Jardim is due in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday to sign a contract until the end of 2027.
