According to Globo.com, Flamengo and River Plate will use their mid-season meeting in Portugal to discuss Matias Viña’s situation, with the left-back on loan to the Argentines until December but potentially returning early.

River have already contacted Flamengo to signal interest in ending the current deal. The clubs will talk further in the coming weeks, as they meet on the third of July in a friendly at Estádio do Algarve.

Flamengo have told River that if the loan is rescinded the Argentines must pay a break clause fee. River cover the player’s wages until December and want to find an agreement for his exit.

Called up by Uruguay for the World Cup, Viña has had limited minutes and criticised displays in Argentina, with 14 appearances, 10 of them starts. For the national team he began the opener against Saudi Arabia but was withdrawn at half-time, then stayed on the bench against Cape Verde.

The loan includes an option to buy that could become an obligation depending on team performance targets. Viña’s Flamengo contract runs until 2028.

Flamengo are assessing the left side in this window. An extension with Alex Sandro to the end of 2027 is close, and Ayrton Lucas remains under contract. There is currently no proposal or movement for a departure.
