According to Globo.com, Independiente Medellín v Flamengo at Estadio Atanasio Girardot was called off after disorder involving home supporters, and the Brazilian side now await a Conmebol decision that could grant a W.O. and three points. Recent cases underpin the club’s optimism.
Article 24.2 of Conmebol’s Disciplinary Code states that if a team is deemed responsible for a definitive suspension, cancellation or abandonment, the result is determined as a W.O. In football, the opponent is awarded a 3-0 win.
Conmebol will open a case to decide the match’s fate, with its Disciplinary Unit ruling based on the official documentation. A W.O. is a likely outcome, but not certain. The decision will be accelerated given the short time before the next round.
Independiente Medellín are in a turbulent spell, prompting protests from their fans. The team were booed before kick-off, and members of DIM’s organised groups arrived in black with faces covered.
As the game was about to start, pyrotechnics and projectiles were launched towards the pitch. There was also a small fire in the stands at the Atanasio Girardot.
