Flamengo are using the mid-season window to restore fitness, with Léo Ortiz, Saúl and Jorginho the early priorities. Leonardo Jardim hopes to have the trio available during the camp.
According to Globo.com, Ortiz suffered a grade-one right hamstring problem in the win over Coritiba, the last match before the World Cup pause. After a short break, he returned early to the training centre.
He is following the plan and has not yet rejoined full training, but recovery is on schedule and there is no rush. He will travel to Portugal with the squad, and no deadline has been given.
Jorginho fractured a toe on his right foot in the defeat to Palmeiras, missing the Cusco and Coritiba games. He reported back on Friday and trained with team-mates without restrictions.
Saúl also came back early to build fitness. He is working with the group and doing specific top-ups to reach 100 percent. He had left-ankle surgery this season and only returned in April.
Flamengo plan to strengthen work not only with that trio but with others who struggled physically. Plans will adjust as the nine call-ups return from the World Cup, depending on their condition.
The restart began lightly, with medicals and assessments on Friday, a full physical day on Monday, then tactical work on Tuesday.
The squad fly to Portugal on 28 June for friendlies against River Plate on three July, Lausanne on eight July and Benfica on eleven July, returning to Brazil on twelve July. They will be shorthanded, including Alex Sandro, Léo Pereira, Lucas Paquetá, Carrascal, Plata, Arrascaeta, Varela and De La Cruz on international duty. Even if their teams go out, the expectation is the players will be granted a few days’ holiday.
