Flamengo physiotherapist Laniyan Neves has been called up to join Uruguay's backroom staff for the 2026 World Cup, the club said in a statement on Saturday. He has been granted leave for the duration of the tournament.

His involvement will allow him to oversee Giorgian De Arrascaeta's recovery from a grade two calf injury. He will also manage the midfielder, the club's number 10, during the tournament and align plans for his return after the World Cup.

The request came from Arrascaeta, who has worked with Neves for some time at the club's training base.

Neves was promoted to the first team in 2020 after joining as an academy intern. He was dismissed last year, then reinstated soon after at the request of players and staff.

He becomes the 11th Flamengo professional involved at the World Cup. Léo Nannetti is assisting Brazil's training. The nine other call-ups are Danilo, Alex Sandro, Paquetá, Léo Pereira, Carrascal, Plata, Arrascaeta, Varela and De la Cruz.
