Flamengo thrashed Sampaio Corrêa 7-1 on Saturday (7) to reach the Campeonato Carioca quarter-finals, setting up a meeting with Botafogo. The night also brought a medical scare and a disputed penalty retake.

According to Coluna Do Fla, these were the main developments around the club on Sunday (8).

Early in the first half, Sampaio’s midfielder Alexandre suffered a convulsion. Pedro was among the Flamengo players who came to the opponent’s aid.

Later, with Flamengo already 6-1 up, the referee awarded a penalty. Bruno Henrique slipped and made a double touch, so the kick was retaken at the Maracanã, prompting protests from Sampaio Corrêa.

Since July 2025, the law has said that if the taker accidentally touches the ball twice, by slipping or the ball hitting the support foot, and it goes in, the kick must be retaken. The referee’s decision was therefore correct.

The victory left Flamengo fourth in Group B on seven points. Under the Carioca regulations, that places them against the group winners in the next phase.
