Barcelona took a major step towards the La Liga title with a dominant win over Espanyol, but the bigger picture was always about what comes next – the decisive Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

Despite trailing 0-2 from the first leg, Hansi Flick chose not to rotate heavily in the derby.

Instead, he went strong, and the result was a convincing performance that not only secured three points but also extended Barcelona’s lead over Real Madrid to nine points.

As reported by SPORT, apart from the result, the match offered clear clues about Flick’s thinking ahead of the trip to the Metropolitano.

Defence taking shape

In goal, Joan Garcia remains the undisputed starter.

However, the bigger hints came in the full-back positions, where Jules Kounde did not feature at all against Espanyol, while Joao Cancelo only appeared in the second half.

Both are now expected to start, arriving fresh for the second leg.

At centre-back, the absence of Pau Cubarsi due to suspension forces a change.

Gerard Martin is fit and ready, while the second spot will likely be contested between Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo.

Midfield dilemma for Flick

The midfield remains one of the biggest question marks.

Frenkie de Jong made a brief return after a long injury layoff, playing only ten minutes.

With Marc Bernal unavailable, Flick must decide whether to risk starting the Dutchman or use him from the bench.

If De Jong does not start, Pedri could be partnered by one of Eric Garcia, Gavi or Marc Casado.

Attack offers multiple options

In attack, Marcus Rashford was rested, making him the leading option on the left wing.

On the right, Lamine Yamal will carry much of Barcelona’s creative responsibility.

The biggest uncertainty lies in the central role.

Ferran Torres comes into the game after ending his goal drought with a brace, while Robert Lewandowski was fully rested and will be fresh.

Another option is Dani Olmo, who has previously impressed as a false nine. If he is not used centrally, he will compete with Fermin Lopez for the attacking midfield role.
