The departure of Inigo Martinez has hurt FC Barcelona more than they might have anticipated in the ongoing season.

The veteran centre-back was not only a leader on the pitch, but also the ideal fit to execute Hansi Flick’s high-line tactics and offside trap – something that the club have struggled with of late, while he was also the only left-footed central defender in the squad.

Furthermore, given Andreas Christensen’s continued fitness concerns and contract situation, Barcelona are pretty much guaranteed to enter the market for a new centre-back in 2026.

Hansi Flick wants Nico Schlotterbeck

As such, Fichajes reports that Barcelona manager Flick has asked the club to make a financial effort to secure a key defensive signing: Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund.

The 25-year-old German centre-back has emerged as Flick’s top target, and indications point towards a possible departure from the Bundesliga club next summer.

Schlotterbeck’s current contract at Signal Iduna Park runs until 2027, and as he enters the latter half of his deal, speculation about his future has intensified.

The defender has yet to agree to an extension, despite Dortmund offering a new contract until 2030 with improved wages.

His reluctance to renew has opened the door to interest from major European clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

Schlotterbeck seen as priority by Flick

As per the report, Flick views Schlotterbeck as a perfect fit for his tactical setup. Barcelona are seeking a left-footed centre-back with pace, strength, and composure on the ball, qualities that the German international possesses.

Despite the club’s financial limitations, Barcelona have already begun working to position themselves as the most appealing destination for the defender.

The Blaugrana sporting department believes Schlotterbeck’s profile suits the club’s footballing philosophy and long-term planning.

But with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also in the picture, it remains to be seen if Flick gets his desired signing or not.
