Florian Wirtz says Liverpool need to be less “wild” if they are to get past Paris St. Germain in the Champions League.

Liverpool face the reigning Champions League winners in Paris in the first leg of the quarter final on Wednesday, looking to bounce back from Saturday’s heavy FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Reflecting on that defeat, Wirtz explained: “I think on the weekend, we tried too much at one point. It was a little bit wild on the pitch so we have to fix that for this game.”

The attacking midfielder also says the Liverpool players must stick together better than they did against City, when they have tough moments against PSG.

“We need 90 minutes of full energy and full commitment, otherwise we will have no chance,” he said.

“We need to be together as a team also in difficult moments, if we concede we have to stick together, and believe we can win.”

Wirtz joined Liverpool last summer for a hefty price tag, and admits his debut season for the club has not panned out as hoped.

“We had some goals this season,” he said. “Of course, last season the team won the Premier League and this was for sure the aim for this season as well.

“We’re still in the Champions League now so there’s still something to play for. Also qualification for the Champions League next season.

“We still have some goals we want to achieve. We want it to be better but we still have something to play for.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has come under increasing pressure following the defeat to City but Wirtz insists all the players are behind the Dutchman.

“We believe in the manager,” he said. “The team should believe in the manager because the team won the league last season.

“We had a lot of good games this season. As I said before, we wanted it to be better but it is what it is now and we still have things to play for.

“All I can say is that we believe in the manager and we’ll give our best on the pitch tomorrow.”
