Feyenoord have been flattened in Match day One of the Champions League, suffering a 4-0 home defeat to German champions Bayer Leverkusen. With hope running high across Rotterdam, there were several signs ahead of the game that a shock might have been on the cards. Leverkusen’s mighty unbeaten run had recently come to an end and Feyenoord were looking to continue on their unbeaten start across all competitions. However, it was the Germans who prevailed.

After a season’s absence from the Champions League, Leverkusen wasted no time in making a mark on this year’s competition. It took Florian Wirtz just five minutes to open the scoring, stroking home from outside the area. Grimaldo netted a second on 30 minutes and it was clear to see that the Feyenoord ship was sinking. Brian Priske’s side lacked any real sting and watched on as Leverkusen went 4-0 up before halftime.

The Eredivisie giants put up a fight in the second half and could have scored a couple of goals on their day. Ayase Ueda did manage to put the ball in the back of the net, only for the assistant’s flag to deny the substitute. A rare defeat for Feyenoord, but with two weeks until their clash against Girona, they’ve got plenty of time to improve. NAC Breda and NEC Nijmegen come before that in the Eredivisie.
