Fluminense v Flamengo halted by heavy rain in Rio de Janeiro

Fluminense v Flamengo in the fourth round of the Campeonato Carioca at the Maracanã was halted after nine minutes because of heavy rain in Rio de Janeiro.

Referee Alex Gomes Stefano stopped the clássico and sent both teams to the dressing rooms. According to Globo.com, the downpour quickly left the pitch in poor condition.

An initial 15-minute pause was set for a pitch inspection at 18:28, with further checks planned at the same interval.

Match delegate Marcelo Viana said he believed play could resume in around 30 minutes, and that groundstaff would make holes in the turf to aid drainage.

The teams returned to the pitch at 18:43, and play restarted 11 minutes later at 18:54 after a 45-minute suspension.
