Phil Foden was delighted after his Player of the Match performance propelled City to a 2-0 Club World Cup victory over Moroccan side Wydad AC.

The Academy graduate found the net at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field in a record-breaking one minute and 54 seconds, claiming the fastest goal in the history of the competition by firing in a loose ball from eight yards.

The Englishman then set up the second before the interval, curling a corner into the box for Jeremy Doku to expertly volley in.

Erling Haaland came close twice in the last 10 minutes, whilst Rico Lewis was shown a straight red card after his foot accidentally caught the face of Samuel Obeng following a perfectly timed sliding challenge.

Foden, who was named Player of the Match, spoke about his happiness with his display after the game.

"I seem to score most of my goals in and around the box. So I was just staying alive. And the ball fell to me and I put it away nicely. So I’m really happy," he said.

"Yeah I'm very happy. Very happy for the team to start the tournament with a win. It was difficult at times with the heat, we’re not used to playing in it, so we had to keep the ball a little bit more and be more patient.

"Fair play to them, they’re a top team on the counter attack. They caused a lot of chances as well that we had to deal with. Happy with the performance and happy with the three points.

"New season, fresh me. So I’m just looking forward to the season now. It’s still early on. I just need to keep training well and be the best version of me. Hopefully I can perform like this every game."

Pep Guardiola provided full debuts for new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, whilst Doku's goal was his first for City since January.

Foden reserved some praise for the Belgian after his expert finish and was impressed with the displays from our new arrivals.

"Yeah, it was a great finish [from Doku]. I didn’t see it until I came off the pitch. I saw it back on the replay.

"What a finish, it was a difficult technique. He made it look easy.

"They’re all top players. They’ve settled in really well. I’m excited to keep playing with them."
