Folarin Balogun voiced disappointment after the United States were beaten 1-4 by Belgium in the World Cup last 16.
He had been at the centre of a global row after his suspension was overturned following a request by Donald Trump to FIFA. The forward said in a post on Wednesday that this was his first World Cup, the four year wait made the setback harder, and he apologised to supporters, admitting the team fell short at the decisive moment.
The Monaco striker did not stand out in the loss, and the result brought the United States’ campaign to an end.
Balogun also struck an upbeat note about the team’s future, highlighting the sport’s growth in America, rising confidence, talent and passion, and suggesting the best is still to come, even asking why it could not be them.
This was his first World Cup.
