Milan coach Paulo Fonseca urges his players to imitate Liverpool and Mohamed Salah following their recent 3-1 Champions League loss and ahead of tomorrow’s derby della Madonnina.

The Rossoneri were booed by their own fans earlier this week when they lost their opening Champions League game of the season.

Fonseca is under pressure and there are rumours that he will be sacked if Milan lose against city rivals Inter tomorrow.

The Portuguese tactician previewed the game at a pre-match press conference on Saturday, but he also had time to discuss the recent Champions League fixture against the Reds.

“I want to have the ball to create the condition to attack at the right moment,” he said.

“It’s hard to create many chances against Liverpool. I’ve watched all their games these years, and it’s not easy. We created four or five chances in which we could do more if we had made better decisions in the final moment.

“The problem is not how many chances we created but the fact that we didn’t make the right decisions. I remember four or five situations where we had these chances. It’s all about the final decision. Salah was the player with the fewer touches, but when he had the ball, he hit the woodwork twice. It’s about decisions, too.”

Fonseca insisted that Milan must be consistent during the game and keep the same identity, and once again, he mentioned Liverpool as a model for his players.

“Liverpool is a good example of a team. They conceded after three minutes, but they didn’t change,” he said.

“They played in the same way. With the ball, they always had the same determination and confidence. I know the moment is different. I know Liverpool have had the same team for years, and it’s a process they started with Jurgen Klopp. What I want is to see my players have the same confidence. Nothing must change if we make a mistake or we concede a goal. This is the self-confidence I want to see in my players. They can do the same and Liverpool are a great example of that.”

Milan has won just one game across all competitions this season. They have five points in four Serie A matches, in which they scored nine goals and conceded six.
