“For any goalkeeper…” – Enzo Maresca’s excuse for shocking Jorgensen showing | OneFootball

Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Lincoln in the Carabao Cup third round. It wasn’t a great game from anyone, frankly.

Maresca gives excuses for shaky goalkeeping performance

He had already admitted he was angry at half time. So what else had irked him? What about Filip Jorgensen’s nervy showing? The coach defender the backup goalkeeper:

“I think that, I don’t know how many balls they put into the box tonight, you know, throw-ins, free-kick, cross, so I think it was not easy for any goalkeeper, to be honest,” the Italian coach said.

“And I think overall, even, you know, we conceded against Brentford in extra time from throw-ins, it’s not easy, it’s not easy because they bring so many players inside the box, they try to create chaos around the goalkeepers, so you cannot move, you cannot go out, you cannot catch the ball, it’s difficult.”

“And also, you know, for Filip, I think it was the first game of the season, so not easy, but at the end, again, we won the game, I was very worried about this game.”

Maresca stands up to defend his keeper

I mean, it’s a bit of a nonsense to say it was his first game of the season when he played more than 90 minutes total just a few days ago against Manchester United, but we’ll let him off on that one.

A manager is always going to defend his players, especially a goalkeeper, and that’s just what he did here. Let’s just hope that a few more games improve the Swedish Dane’s form a little. Maresca has said he’s going to play “a lot” this season. At this rate we’d rather see Robert Sanchez – and that’s saying something.
