Speaking in an interview with AS, AS Roma and Spain defender Mario Hermoso has addressed the recent rumours linking him with a January transfer to Real Madrid.

Hermoso, 29, came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid but left without making a senior appearance. After a stint at RCD Espanyol, the defender ended up at Atletico Madrid where he spent five years before leaving for Roma as a free agent last summer.

Now, with Los Blancos searching for a new centre-back amidst an injury crisis, Hermoso’s name has been mentioned as a possible target.

Discussing the rumours of him being on Real Madrid’s agenda for January, Hermoso acknowledged that he had learnt about the speculations and was honoured by the links.

“Yes, yes. I’ve read about it. Many friends have passed it on to me. It has happened in several markets. Whenever you are linked with big teams it is an honour,” said the former Atletico Madrid man.

“I was in their youth academy and I’m grateful for everything they contributed to my training.”

Talking about how it is not always easy for academy talents to break into the first-team setup at Real Madrid, Hermoso added:

“It happened to me. I couldn’t have continuity in the first team, but that allowed me to go to Espanyol and I’m very proud of my time there. I gave everything I had and they gave me everything they had.

“I will always have spectacular memories and I felt very loved. In Madrid, there are kids in the youth academy with great potential. I hope they can take advantage of the opportunity if they have it.”

Finally, Hermoso admitted that he would never close the doors on a return to Spain, as he said:

“I am 29 years old, most of my career has been in Spain, I like La Liga football and being in your country makes everything easier. I can’t close the door on returning to Spain.”
