Former Chelsea forward Lucy Watson has joined Barclays WSL2 club Durham on a free transfer.

The Wildcats announced news of the deal via a post on their official club website this morning.

The 21-year-old joins Durham after leaving former club Chelsea earlier this summer. She has impressed the coaches during a period training with the County Durham side.

Watson initially impressed after breaking into the senior team at Sheffield United and she was snapped up by Chelsea in summer 2022. The forward was previously seen as one of the brightest young prospects in the professional game, although injuries have disrupted her progression. She has gained experience in loan spells with Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Ipswich Town in recent years.

On the international stage, Watson has previously turned out for England at Under-17 level.

The player has plenty of potential and she will now be hoping to shine in her spell with Durham.

After joining The Wildcats, Watson said “I’m so excited to be here, I can’t wait to meet all of the fans and hopefully have a great season in blue.”

Watson could go straight into the Durham squad for this afternoon’s Barclays WSL2 fixture against Charlton Athletic at Maiden Castle.
