Former Chelsea striker “worth £200m” in modern market claims controversial pundit

Troy Deeney is a bit of a clown, but he does have some takes we enjoy, and while the bulk of his column for the Sun this week was spent ranting about the Premier League Hall of Fame (honestly Troy, who cares) he also went off on a tangent on a strongly Chelsea related tangent.

Noting the influx of big strong strikers to the top teams, he harkened back to the best of the bunch – Didier Drogba.

Drogba’s impact on world football clear from Deeney praise

His praise of the legendary forward shows just what an impact on the footballing public the Ivorian had in his time at Chelsea.

“In terms of being the full package and being able to do everything brilliantly, there is no one that comes close to what Drogba did at Chelsea,” Deeney wrote.

“When he first arrived in England, while everyone else was playing with two up top, he showed them all up by dominating and leading the line on his own.

“He was elegant and technically superb. He was quick, he could score headers, tap-ins, screamers and free-kicks — all while being an absolute 6ft 2in monster of a human being. How much would he be worth now in his prime? Probably close to £200million.”

Drogba would be worth crazy money today

He justifies that price tag by looking at the money spent on big men Alexander Isak (6ft 4in), Benjamin Sesko (6ft 5in), Victor Gyokeres (6ft 2in) and Nick Woltemade (6ft 6in) this summer. He doesn’t even mention Joao Pedro, who is one of the closest to Drogba in style.

It’s hard to disagree that if those players are going for close to £100m with very little track record, Drogba would have to be worth double that at his peak when he was tearing apart Champions League defences.

All of those teams are just hoping their big summer investments will win half as many trophies for them as DD did for us.
