Former Corinthians No 10 regrets not winning trophies with the club

Currently at Al-Rayyan, in Qatar, forward Róger Guedes, who played for Corinthians from August 2021 to August 2023, gave an exclusive interview to TNT Sports and recalled the 2022 Copa do Brasil final against Flamengo, expressing regret over leaving Parque São Jorge without winning any titles.

On that occasion, the Alvinegro was defeated in the penalty shootout at Maracanã, after two draws in the two legs of the final: “What I wanted most was to have won a title with Corinthians. I had the opportunity in the 2022 Copa do Brasil, everyone says winning there is different, so I was left with this bitter taste. I could have become an idol with that title,” he began.

Later, the forward commented on his departure from Corinthians at the end of July and beginning of August 2023. At that time, the Alvinegro was about to play the second leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinal against São Paulo at Morumbi. Even so, the player chose to transfer to Qatar. The Parque São Jorge club had won the first leg 2-1 in Itaquera, but lost the return match 2-0.

“We tried everything to play the second leg, but the transfer window closed a day before the semifinal and there was no way for them to register me afterward. If I could have chosen to leave a little later, I definitely would have,” he continued.

Finally, he was asked about Yuri Alberto’s chipped penalty against Flamengo, on September 28, at Neo Química Arena, during the 28th round of the 2025 Brazilian Championship. That day, the match was 0-0 and the number 9 missed the penalty at a time when the team was superior to the Cariocas in the game.

Guedes responded by mentioning Pato’s penalty in 2013, against Grêmio, in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil: “At Corinthians, we talked a lot about this. I used to talk to Fábio Santos and he would say, ‘For God’s sake, don’t chip it,’ because we all know the story of the last time, when Pato chipped it. There was always this awkward atmosphere about chipped penalties at Corinthians, so I think I wouldn’t have chosen that shot there,” he concluded.

Playing for Corinthians, despite not winning any titles, Róger Guedes scored 43 goals and provided 10 assists in 126 games (55 wins, 33 draws, and 38 losses – 52.3% success rate). He is the third highest scorer at Neo Química Arena, inaugurated in 2014, with 31 goals in 64 matches.
