Ex Manchester City forward Kisi Musampa has been arrested in a tax fraud case following a police raid on his residence in Netherlands on Tuesday.
Musampa, 48, spent six months on loan at Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2005, scoring four times in 45 appearances in all competition for the Blues, whom he left that summer to return to his parent club in the Spanish capital.
talkSPORT have reported that Musampa’s 65-year-old accountant was also detained in a raid on the former footballer’s Netherlands residence on Tuesday, with Musampa released from custody on Wednesday afternoon.
Police discovered and seized luxury watches and documents in the raid, revolving around an allegation of Musampa defrauding the authorities of defrauding of an amount north of €100,000 (£86,500).
As per the Netherlands’ Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIDO), Musampa had declared that he was working and receiving an income in the country whilst being an overseas tax resident.
A further allegation of Musampa previously holding a property in Amsterdam repossessed amid years of tax issues has come to light following the raid on the residence of the former footballer, who also played for Ajax, Malaga and FC Seoul.
He currently holds the position of assistant manager for Ajax’s reserve squad, with a club statement following the arrest reading: “We are aware of Kiki Musampa’s arrest but think it is too early to react to it in detail.”
It remains to be seen where this leaves Musampa’s propects in management going forward, having held a series of academy managerial roles since his retirement from professional football in 2009.
Far removed from the happenings in Netherlands, Manchester City will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend as Manchester United visit the Etihad Stadium in a battle between the ninth and 13th positions in the Premier League table.
City have their recent Premier League games against Tottenham and Brighton, with little margin for error remaining in the early months of the season if Pep Guardiola’s men are serious about competing with Liverpool and Arsenal for the title.
Gianluigi Donnarumma could be in line to make his Premier League and Manchester City debut against Manchester United on Sunday, having completed a £26 million deadline day transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to the Etihad Stadium on a five-year contract.
Guardiola’s men can ill-afford to keep up their recent run of form but an early peak through the curtain into the new-look team built by recently-appointed director of football Hugo Viana has indicated that more than a few fresh faces will take time to adjust to the demands of English football and the standards at the Etihad Stadium.
