England reached the World Cup quarter-final with a dramatic win over co-hosts Mexico, but celebrations ended with Jordan Henderson taken to hospital after a freak fall.

Two goals from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty settled a five-goal contest in front of around 100,000 at the Azteca Stadium. England played for more than 40 minutes with ten men after Jarell Quansah was sent off following a VAR review of his challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Henderson, an unused substitute, appeared to trip over an advertising board while celebrating with team-mates in front of travelling England fans. England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed the former Sunderland midfielder injured his wrist and is in hospital. Reports have suggested he will not return to England’s Kansas City base and will instead receive treatment in Mexico City.

Tuchel described mixed emotions, saying he was proud of his side’s mentality and heart in finding a way to win at this stage of the tournament. He said they overcame every obstacle and called it a very special night.

He added he was exhausted and saddened by Henderson’s injury, calling it quite serious and saying it did not fit the evening. Tuchel said he did not yet know the next steps.
