Belgian forward Divock Origi has retired from football, announcing the decision on Monday via social media. The former Wolfsburg striker is 31.

The player said in a post that "My purpose in the game is fulfilled", and he thanked supporters, the clubs he represented, team-mates and family.

After a one-year loan at VfL Wolfsburg, Origi won every title with Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool. He struck memorably against Barcelona in the 2018/19 Champions League semi-final, then scored in the all-English final against Tottenham Hotspur.

He also delivered when Wolfsburg most needed him in the 2017/18 relegation or promotion play-off against Holstein Kiel. Origi scored and assisted in the first leg as Wolfsburg preserved their Bundesliga place with a 4-1 aggregate win, while the Lower Saxony club suffered a first-ever relegation last month after losing to Paderborn at a similar stage.

Origi scored seven goals in 36 appearances for Wolfsburg. He played at the World Cup and the Euros with Belgium. With his AC Milan ties ending at the start of the year, he had been without a club.
