Mexico City authorities have raised the death toll to four from celebrations after Mexico’s 2026 World Cup win over Ecuador, with investigators examining what led to asphyxia in three cases.
Three victims, a 44-year-old man and women aged 19 and 48, died from asphyxia, according to city health secretary Nadine Gasman. A fourth man, about 30 and yet to be identified, died in hospital after cardiorespiratory arrest, having been taken in with status epilepticus, convulsions and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Two of the deceased were from Mexico City and one from the State of Mexico, while the fourth remains unidentified.
The city prosecutor is investigating how the deaths occurred and the causes of the asphyxia, and authorities have ruled out any link to alcohol consumption.
Officials are still working to establish the mechanics of the asphyxia and the prosecutor’s findings will set out the circumstances. The city has ordered the immediate strengthening of civil protection, health and security protocols for Mexico’s next match on Sunday.
Prosecutors have opened case files into the deaths and city hall called for inquiries to pursue accountability to the fullest extent. Official figures put about 1.4 million people on the streets across the capital, with more than 35,000 public servants deployed.
About 484,000 gathered on Paseo de la Reforma, Avenida Juárez and at the Monument to the Revolution, with another 95,000 near Estadio Ciudad de México.
