Thomas Frank gives positive updates on Mathys Tel and Xavi Simons, who have both failed to get into the Dane’s starting 11 since early last month.
Tel, who was left out of Spurs’ Champions League squad, has not started a match for Spurs since their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa and Xavi’s last start was against Manchester United before the November international break.
Both players came on for the last 15 minutes in their 2-2 draw with Newcastle in midweek and Frank praised the pair ahead of Spurs’ fixture against Brentford.
“Xavi has trained fantastic the last five or six times,” Frank said about Xavi. “He has a very good attitude on the training pitch, I like that a lot.
“We’ve played different games with different lineups and I think Xavi was towards something better and better. Just like Matty [Tel], trained well, good attitude and we’re getting closer and he’s come on in the last four games.”
The Dane went into further detail about Tel: “The way he carries himself, the way he trains, has been very good,” he said. “He’s mainly played as a nine, but I’m very aware he can play off the left.
“The only thing that any player can do is keep training well, keep doing everything to catch my eye and keep making it difficult for me when I make my decision.”
Tottenham have had issues in attack all season, especially because of long-term injuries to Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke. Solanke is yet to start a game so far because of an ankle injury and Kulusevski has been missing with a knee injury since March.
Frank was asked whether they would be back soon: “No. When they are close to joining the squad, then I will provide an update.”
