Frenkie de Jong sends message to Marc-Andre ter Stegen after confirmation of Ajax move

Earlier this week, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen completed a loan move from Barcelona to Eredivisie giants Ajax. The 33-year-old had been kept waiting to make his trip to Amsterdam, but much to all parties’ relief, everything has now been finalised.

The move allows ter Stegen to reunite with Michel Sanchez, who was his manager during his injury-hit loan spell at Girona last season. He will hope for better at Ajax, and he’s already been welcome to the club by one of his (now former) Barcelona teammates.

Frenkie de Jong came through the ranks at Ajax before joining Barcelona in 2019, and he delivered a welcome message (via X) to the veteran goalkeeper upon his move being announced.

“Hi Marc! Congratulations on your signing. I’ve already told you in person, but once again I tell you that I’m very happy that you’re going to Ajax. I think Ajax are also very happy. They will be able to count on a great player and a great person. The people of Amsterdam will take very good care of you, I know because they also took very good care of me. The fans are amazing and the club is very good. I’m looking forward to seeing you play for Ajax. I will support you from here. I will encourage you. I wish you the best. Ter Stegen will hope for continuity at Ajax

The last couple of years have been tough for ter Stegen. Since suffering a serious knee injury in September 2024, he has struggled for playing time, but he has the chance to feature regularly at Ajax, where he will be the first-choice goalkeeper. Barcelona will be keeping tabs on him, and they will hope that he impresses in order to make a permanent departure next summer much easier.
